Each year, the Club organises various fundraising activities to support its sponsored project(s). The Art Market(Kunstmarkt) in Vaals is one of the fundraising activities. During this market, the club sold items such as art pieces, Ugandan necklaces and arm bands. UKEF thanks all members of the Rotary Club Vaals-Gulpen for their support and sponsorship.

UKEF’s first consultative/brainstorming meeting with parent and staff of Laker International School had a full room with over 200 parents in attendance.
Nothing is more energising than working with a team of enthusiastic partners.
Parents who take pride and ownership of our school project and are involved in their children’s education.
They shared with UKEF some of the challenges the local community go through and the hope they have for the future.
Nestar gave a presentation about UKEF,  the activities it does here in The Netherlands to raise funds and thanked UKEF partners/sponsors.

UKEF also handed over school materials including tables and chairs, bookshelves for all classes, an office cupboard, a laptop computer, a printer, a beamer, badges, sports uniforms.
Watching an educative cartoon movie together was part of the day too. Our school pupils performed poems, music and dance to entertain all the guests. A day full of learning, movie, dance and some light drinks.

We are pleased to share with you some pictures from that day. Please meet some of our partners/parents from Kitgum in photos.

How far can you get when you put your mind to it!

Biking for Books is a fundraiser initiated by our friend, Paul Moraal. Paul decided to do something extraordinary to celebrate and remember his 50th birthday. He wanted to make a difference in the lives of children.

On 6th and 7th of June, Paul took part in the 24-Hour Melfar Biking Challenge in Denmark. In place of presents, he asked his family, relatives, friends, colleagues and well-wishers to sponsor this challenge by donating to Uganda Kitgum Education Foundation, UKEF. UKEF enables children in North-Uganda’s town of Kitgum to attend school and get an education.

How did the 24hours go? The weather was quite good without any rain, though strong winds kept up the entire 24 hours. And Denmark turned out not to be completely flat!

In the first 12 hours Paul covered 325km, going full speed in his youthful optimism, but then the second half was tougher and a certain degree of tiredness set in…

However, the Melfar24 organization was perfect with good catering all through the night, and the fact that some 200 other crazy cyclists were on a similar mission somehow alleviated the suffering. Paul’s bike was working perfectly, thanks to the great service from Bikes-4-Fun in Vaals. Coupled with Paul’s preparation, man and machine made it through the 24 hours.
Paul covered a total distance of 560km, what an amazing result !

Even better, the Target Amount of € 3.000,- was blown away, thanks to your support, the fundraiser realised a total of € 5.657,- !
This result makes it possible for UKEF to buy all the necessary books for the 155 children in Laker International School for the next school-year!
The excess amount will be used to fill up the school feeding programme budget for the children.
We are so thankful to Paul for this selfless, unique and successful fundraiser. A special thank you to all the generous sponsors/donors.

Personal note from Paul:

“Thank you all so much for supporting this beautiful educational foundation in Uganda!
Knowing that I wasn’t alone in this helped me tremendously throughout these memorable 24 hours! “

Here are some pictures from the 24hour cycling challenge…Enjoy!
